靈感來自驚慄大師希治閣(Alfred Hitchcock）1963年執導的一部電影《鳥》（The Birds）,片中其中一幕為鳥群聚集，蓄勢待發向人類施襲。觀眾的等待伴隨著著學生所詠唱的童謠Risseldy, rosseldy, mow, mow, mow. 然而，藝術家把人和鳥從畫面抽走，救了那些怕鳥的人，剩下單調荒誕的歌詞於奇異空間裡迴環往復。眾人期待的角色遲遲未出現，乾等待的時間永遠教人着急，於是等待者們重覆唱着歌謠來渡過那比實際上漫長的時間，分散等候帶來的焦燥。不停的重覆把意義消磨掉，致使從聽話者的角度聽來一切只是荒謬又滑稭的慣常，成為空氣中其中一種白嗓音。 Inspired by “The Birds” (1963) directed by Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980), her latest work tells of a story about waiting - to remain in unending expectation. 等待缺席者 我先要說一個鬼故事：那是一座在民初時代搭建的木廁所，它隱藏在一所從二次世界大戰後便荒廢的學校的後園子內。由於日久失修，六格廁所只剩下四扉門，風吹過，他們都像快要掉下來的支支作嚮。月光把廁所外榕樹的影子打在廁格牆上，聞說這榕樹吸收著樹底下腐爛屍體的養份所以長得特別荗盛。突如其來嘭一聲，其中一道廁格門一下子關上。 說到這裏，不知道其他人有沒有一點怕，反正我自己就開始有點緊張了。但其實鬼一直都沒有出現，連人影都沒一個。我只提供了場境，舊學校／木廁所／夜／榕樹⋯⋯然後就等待核心人物「鬼」的出現。故事就此懸空，我想說的是另一個相似的故事。 上面這幾張照片，是截取自希治閣的電影《鳥》其中一段，海鷗在一個兒童慶生會上襲擊人類的情節。我把其中幾幕抽出，修圖後所有角色不見了，只剩下慶生會陽光普照，色彩斑爛的場景。恐佈的角色沒有了，核心人物－襲擊人的鳥和受襲的人都缺席，場境跟我們認知的恐佈片也不切合，那還會可怕嗎？ 我把這些照片放在一個名《鳥》的文件夾內，再以電郵標題《鳥》，傳送給我一位有恐鳥症 (Ornithophobia)的朋友。這位朋友的恐鳥症由兒時已經影嚮他的日常生活，他經常因為要避開鳥而繞路，遇見海鷗會尖叫逃跑，鳥類圖片也不能看，他會怕得撕掉，鳥在電視中出現他會把頭擰開不看，這是個伴了他一生的症狀。 我把圖寄給這位朋友前，已先告訴他那是《鳥》這電影的劇照，但五張圖片中只有一張有一隻鳥在，請他把鳥找出來。我傳送照片時已經是夜深，所以我跟他說慢慢來，找個他覺得合適的時候看。又或者他真的受不了，也不一定要看，告訴我就好。他表明想參與的決心，但一個星期過了仍然音訊全無，於是我在第二個星期去了找他陪他一起看。他說看見郵件及文件夾的名字一直怕著沒有想打開。 我們坐在電腦前面，他一隻手半遮眼睛，一隻手點擊圖片，戰戰競競地看每一張的圖片，緊張得尖叫及流了一身冷汗。完成後，他告訴我好像是第三張也好像是第五張，我才告訴他其實都沒有，照片中沒有一隻鳥。 上面兩個故事都一樣，我只提供了場境，其餘的都是閱讀者從過往的經驗，對缺席者「鬼」和「鳥」將會出現的幻想。我們對缺席者的期待，但因為那種不確定性，來還是不來，所以我們焦慮。 刊於明報 (2016/06/26)副刊 | 圖文城市：等待缺席者
